Truth and Reconciliation Day, on September 30th, is a day to reflect on the tragic history of residential schools in Canada. It honors the Indigenous children who were taken from their families and communities. In residential schools, indigenous children suffered abuse, neglect, and cultural suppression. They were forbidden to speak their languages or practice their traditions. Many children died while attending these schools due to disease, neglect, and/or abuse. Their stories are a dark chapter in our Canadian history. They will be remembered - and we must learn from it, not only on September 30th.
