Extra-Curricular Activities/ Clubs

This is a competition that involves a sophisticated science investigation in the field of biotechnology. The investigation is most often conducted within a laboratory at a university, college, research facility, or business, and is carried out under the guidance of a mentor. The competition (somewhat similar to a science fair) takes place at the end of March/early April. Information meetings take place in September.

Come and learn to make something beautiful with yarn!  No experience necessary - hooks, yarn, and instruction are provided. This is a great opportunity to relax and enjoy learning a calming new skill. We meet weekly on Thursdays at lunch in room 333.

Starting in May, disc Golf will be a lunch activity twice a week where we play a few of the school’s areas in the 9 hole course.

The Provincial Forest Envirothon is part of the international education known as the NCF- Envirothon Program. This program attracts Island high school students who are interested in the environment and how people depend on and interact with the natural world.

Through the Envirothon program, students explore options and issues in various natural resource sciences and address real world problems that face our environment, economy and society. Many students have used the knowledge and experience they gained through Envirothon to go on to further studies and eventually careers in forestry, wildlife biology, fisheries management, agriculture, engineering and more. The Island Competition is an overnight competition that takes place at the end of October.

The Empowering Youth through Engagement in Service (E.Y.E.S.) Committee is a school based citizenship group which provides opportunities for students to volunteer in the school and community. Activities and events are driven by student interests and vary from year to year but have supported groups in the past such as the local seniors home, food bank, QEH, and the Humane Society to name a few. The group has regular scheduled meetings on select Wednesdays throughout the year at 11:45am in Room #205.

The Filmmaking Club meets weekly over lunch, and sometimes after school, as a place to learn about filmmaking, with the aim of completing student driven projects.

The GSA is a group that promotes a healthy and open atmosphere for all students to discuss issues of gender and sexuality. From year to year the group adapts to address the issues and concerns presented by the student population.

The Rural Hack Club was started to generate interest in computing at Charlottetown Rural High School. This has grown into a club with both new members and experienced members competing in nationally recognized computing competitions!  We are committed to working with every individual who joins and teaching them the basics of programming.  From Python to Java to HTML and JS, you can pick one or try your hand at them all!  The Rural Hack Club is a place where everyone is welcome, no experience required!

The Improv Team is a group of students who train and practice the skills of Improvisational performance in order to compete in the Canadian Improv Games.

Model United Nations is an opportunity for students to gain a perspective on world issues while practicing their parliamentary debate skills. Students attend Model UN every year in May where CRHS students research, analyze, and debate with and against other students from across Atlantic Canada on current global issues.

An information meeting takes place in the fall. Interested students conduct a science investigation, often carrying out the procedure at a lab facility outside of the school (under the guidance of a mentor). Students who participate in the Biogenius are encouraged to participate in the provincial science fair (if possible).

Shad is a program that takes place at a number of universities across Canada in which students have the opportunity to attend a month-long summer program that is focused on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math). Information meetings are held in September/October.

The deadline to apply is typically in November.

Skills Canada is an international organization whose mandate is to encourage youth to consider skills and technology-based career options. Through this initiative, students are invited to participate in skilled trades and technology competitions within a variety of disciplines. Beginning at the secondary school level, successful candidates can move onto provincial, national, and international (biyearly) competition where they are able to highlight their knowledge.

The student council works to improve school climate and school spirit as well as support all student activities such as arts and athletics. The student council executive consists of 8 members who have been elected by their peers to represent them. There are always opportunities for interested students to become involved in the non-executive committees. These committees assist the executive in helping to create, promote and organize events and activities within the school. Non-executive meetings are held as needed in the lecture theatre.

The CRHS Student Debating Society is a member of the Canadian Student Debating Federation which promotes the study and use of debate in school and community. This student group comes together to practice debate skills on global, national, and local issues. Meets every Tuesday at lunch.

The Writing Club is a group of students who love language and literature. We meet once a week from 11:30-12:30 to write, share our writing, talk about writing, and talk about books.

Our yearbook committee produces the school yearbook each year. Students photograph sports events, club activities, school events, committees, class activities, etc. Students then design the
layout for the book, collaborate on pages, proof the book and get it set for print. Students also promote the yearbook and sell books for the upcoming year.

• Meetings occur at least once a week (Currently Mondays in Room 201 at 11:45) to discuss content. Individuals can work on the book at home as we use a website to create the book.
• Students are needed as photographers, designers, file organizers, for data entry, for publicity, to input creativity, and for selling yearbooks. New members are always welcome!
