Registration in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program

Registration in the IB Diploma Program

Grade 10: Rural IB Preparatory Courses

Registration information sessions and registration take place in April.  See the CRHS website for dates and times.

Students entering grade 10 at CRHS may choose to enroll in our Rural IB Preparatory Courses.   Each of these courses is designed with the purpose of developing skills that are needed for the successful completion of the IB Diploma.

While these courses parallel the regular academic courses, the grade 10 curriculum is covered more quickly and a greater emphasis is placed on independent work, research, writing, oral communication and experimentation. Rural IB Preparation courses are not, however, required pre-requisites for entry into the IB Diploma Program in Grade 11.

The table to the right shows recommended course enrollment for English and French Immersion students.

EAL students are strongly advised to enroll in grade 10 writing (WRT421A) as well.

Physics

For students interested in Physics (which is not currently available in IB at the Rural) , it is possible to register for the Physics 521A (grade 11) course in the second semester of grade 10.  The pre-requisite is Science 421A or B which will be available in the first semester.  Note that students who wish to pursue this option should have strong achievement in their grade 9 Science and grade 10 Math and Science 421 courses.

In the event that scheduling Physics 521A requires deferral of CEO 421A to make room, the student would be required to complete this course in grade 11 if he or she does not enroll in the IB Diploma Program.

IB Diploma Program Registration (Grades 11-12)

Registration for courses, including the IB Diploma Program, takes place in the spring of the grade ten year.  Information is provided through homeroom teachers in grade ten.  To see course choices for the IB Diploma Program click What is IB? .

In order to register for the International Diploma Program, students will need to meet the following requirements:

  • Complete an IB application form (provided by the homeroom teacher).

  • Have achieved, or currently be maintaining, a minimum of 75% in grade 10 academic Mathematics, Science and English.

  • Complete an “on-demand” writing assignment to determine abilities in reading, writing and analysis of English texts. Via this exercise, proficiency in the language of instruction will be assessed and may be used as a criterion to determine suitability.

Should further screening of applicants be necessary, marks in grade 10 courses, attendance, and demonstrated ability to complete course requirements will also be considered.

Students wishing to enroll in the IB Program should be self motivated, organized, interested in being challenged and have a commitment to succeed. A good work ethic, diligence and time management are important skills to have when working towards the IB Diploma. The course work requires that you are a competent reader and an effective communicator. You will be asked to problem solve, think critically, and become involved in the community. Students are encouraged to become learners dedicated to the ten goals of the IB learner profile, including becoming inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers ,communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk takers, balanced, and reflective learners.

Students who wish to enter the Diploma Program should do so with a good understanding of its nature and requirements as well as have the intention to remain in the Program for the two years.

Students discerning enrollment in the IB Diploma Program, together with their parents or guardians, are encouraged to contact the IB Coordinator at CRHS with questions or to arrange a meeting.  Prior to registration time, information sessions are held for parents and within the school day for grade 10 students interested in the Program.
